What is WWHR?
What is Waste Water Heat Recovery (WWHR)?
When you shower, you use water heated by the building's hot water system, such as a boiler, heat pump, hot water cylinder or district heating unit. A Waste Water Heat Recovery (WWHR) system captures heat energy that would normally go down the drain during showers.
By using the residual heat from the waste water, a WWHR system preheats the incoming mains cold water feed. This heat exchange reduces the energy demand from water heaters because the heat energy that would normally go down the drain is being reused.
Every shower then needs less energy for hot water. This lowers CO2 emissions and energy costs.

Hot water leaves the water heater at 60°C.

At the shower mixer, hot and cold water mix to 40°C.

The shower water drains through the Showersave unit at around 35°C.

Cold mains water enters the unit at 10°C and is warmed by the draining shower water.

The preheated water (around 25°C) flows to the shower mixer, the water heater or both, depending on the connection.

Result: less energy for hot water, lower energy costs and lower CO2 emissions.
Benefits of Showersave WWHR
Recognised in energy calculations
Lowers the calculated energy demand of a building, for example in NTA 8800 (NL) and PHPP (Passive House).
Cost-effective CO2 reduction
Lower CO2 emissions with every shower, without any action from the user.
Lower energy costs
Lower energy costs for residents, building owners and operators.
Low maintenance
Passive units have no moving parts and need little or no maintenance.
Easy installation
Quick to install. The unit can stay connected during the pressure test of the installation.
For every type of building
From single homes to hotels and sports facilities, there is a Showersave system for every project.

Showersave systems have been installed in more than 200,000 homes since 2005. Each one recovers heat from shower water that would otherwise go down the drain. Our systems are easy to install and need little or no maintenance. Download the brochure for an overview of the full range.
